Remembering his mother each night before he sleeps, young Mokatek recounts his day to the brightest star in the sky, the North Star. But one night, under the full moon of the summer solstice, Mokatek realizes that the star has disappeared.
So begins a journey that will test his courage and strength with every step. Along the way, Mokatek is guided by Pokjinskwes, the Spirit of Sounds and Animals, that helps him move ever closer to his own origins and the land.
A theatrical blend of puppets, objects, songs and music, this multi-sensory show performed within a tent within the theatre, introduces children to the First Nations language of the Abenakis (“people of the land of the dawn”) and the Anishinabek.

Chaque soir, avant de s’endormir, Mokatek compte les étoiles. Une nuit de pleine lune, l’Astre du Nord disparaît. Ainsi commence un voyage initiatique lors duquel Mokatek tente de retrouver son étoile, et qui lui permettra de prendre conscience de sa force et de son courage intérieurs.
Marionnettes, objets, chansons et musique sont au rendez-vous de cette œuvre multisensorielle née d’un profond désir de permettre aux enfants et à leurs parents de découvrir les langues et la cosmogonie autochtones. En allant à la rencontre des Abénaquis (« le peuple de la terre de l’aube ») et des Malécites (« le peuple de la belle rivière »), les enfants découvriront la riche culture de ces Premières Nations.

Ondinnok Theatre/Les Productions Ondinnok : Ondinnok is a Huron word meaning: ‘a theatrical healing ritual that reveals the secret desire of the soul’. Born out of the urgency of a veritable cultural reconstruction, Ondinnok presents an ethic anchored in the values bequeathed by the ancestors. An artistic resistance of the very highest level. // Ondinnok est la première compagnie de théâtre francophone autochtone au Canada. Elle fut fondée par Yves Sioui Durand, Catherine Joncas et John Blondin, en 1985 lors de la création du Porteur des peines du monde au Festival du théâtre des Amériques qui s’est méritée le prix de l’Américanité. Depuis 2017, le comédien, auteur de théâtre et scénariste Dave Jenniss est à la direction artistique de la compagnie. En plus de trente ans, Ondinnok a produit plus d’une vingtaine d’oeuvres et événements artistiques devenant par le fait même l’initiateur d’une dramaturgie autochtone francophone contemporaine. Ses créations questionnent et explorent toute la complexité d’être amérindien au temps de la modernité et de l’urbanité. Plus que du théâtre, l’œuvre d’Ondinnok vibre bien au-delà de l’espace scénique.
